A. About GIZ and the project 

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally owned international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. The GIZ Office in Kigali covers GIZ’s portfolio in Rwanda and Burundi. GIZ Rwanda/Burundi implements projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Union and other commissioning authorities in the following priority areas: Sustainable Economic Development; Good Governance; Climate, Energy and Sustainable Urban Development; Digital Transformation and Digital Economy; and regional projects in the Great Lakes Region. 

The “Climate-Sensitive, Socially Just Planning and Housing (CSPH)” project is part of the German-Rwandan Program for “Climate Protection, Climate Adaptation and Sustainable Urban Development”. The project’s objective is to enhance climate-sensitive urban planning processes and promote access to affordable housing opportunities for poorer population groups, especially women, in cities. It strengthens social, ecological and economic urban development through improved public participation of the local population in planning and decision-making processes. 

In order to create the institutional and planning framework conditions for better access to climate-friendly and socially inclusive housing, the project focuses on a combination of strategy development at national government level, practical neighborhood planning processes in selected cities and enhancing the professional capacities of organizations and individuals in public institutions, the private sector and academic education. 

The project is searching for a suitable candidate for the position of anIntern.The Intern will work for the project “Climate-Sensitive, Socially Just Planning and Housing (CSPH)” as part of the Cluster “Climate and Green Economy (CGE)”. 

Candidate Profile

Location: Kigali

Fixed Term: 1/11/2026 -30/04/2027

B. Responsibilities

• assist research, evaluations, and content preparation for project outputs in neighborhood planning, social rental housing, and capacity development.
• help with communications and public relations, including designing presentations, factsheets, and managing internal/external communications. 
• help with logistics and event management for workshops, events, and retreats, liaising with assist units.
• Facilitate administrative and organizational tasks within the project's urban planning scope.
• Contribute to strategy development and neighborhood planning processes in selected sites.
• Facilitate general organizational and administrative tasks related to the project scope
• Enhance professional capacities through help with training and academic collaborations.

C. Specific tasks 

1. Management and Coordination

• Assist project advisors in activities related to the context of the project.
• Assist the project with any other organizational and management issues.
• Assist and supports collection and analysis of data related to the project activities

2. Communication and Networking

• Communicate well within the GIZ team for ensuring an efficient work-flow and synergies between the different project outputs;
• help with drafting project presentations, newsletter inputs, background materials, and reports for communications and PR

D. Required Qualifications, Competences and Experience

1. Qualifications and professional experience

• Minimum Bachelor/BSc/BA (graduated within the last 12 months) with a focus on a relevant field in relation to the project (e.g. urban/regional planning, architecture, sustainability/environmental studies, infrastructure, urban geography etc.)
• Good knowledge of one or more of the following topics: integrated & inclusive urban development, social/affordable housing, urban infrastructure provision, urban climate action.
• Some experience in development cooperation (approaches, principles) in the field of sustainable urban development. 

2. Other knowledge and additional competences

• Good understanding of climate-sensitive urban planning principles, including adaptation strategies for vulnerable populations.
• Knowledge of design, analysis and layout or geospatial software (InDesign, GIS, Photoshop, etc.) is a plus.
• Natural talent for communication and organization and the ability and willingness to work independently and on your own initiative and to quickly familiarize yourself with complex issues. You also enjoy working actively in a team.
• Experience in event management, preparing trainings or workshops.
• Excellent teamwork and networking abilities, with a proactive approach to collaborating in multicultural settings.
• Excellent command of MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) for reporting and presentations. 
• Fluent written and spoken English skills, French and German is an asset.
