Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET)

Health Builders, in partnership with the Gould Family Foundation (GFF), is seeking a Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) to be based in Kigali, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND

Health Builders is a non-profit organization registered in Rwanda to strengthen primary healthcare. Through a close and collaborative partnership with the Rwandan Ministry of Health and local governments, Health Builders provides training and mentorship to healthcare providers on basic clinical and managerial skills, constructs comprehensive health facilities where access is limited, and equips them with life-saving technology. POSITION SUMMARY

The BMET is tasked with providing biomedical engineering assist to Health Builders-supported health facilities in Rwamagana, Rulindo, Nyabihu, Kicukiro, and Bugesera districts. The primary purpose of the role is to prolong the lifecycle of equipment donated by Health Builders' partners, including GFF and DAK Foundation, through implementation of biomedical maintenance plans. The position also contributes to strengthening sustainable medical equipment management systems through technical assist, capacity building of healthcare workers, documentation, reporting, and continuous quality improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

  • create and execute annual preventive maintenance plans and yearly maintenance schedules for all Health Builders-supported medical equipment, in line with manufacturer recommendations.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair medical equipment and systems; deliver first-line technical assist and escalate complex repairs to manufacturers, suppliers, or contracted service providers as needed.
  • Make periodic rounds of assigned clinical areas to assess equipment operation, note recurring trends, and collaborate with the GFF supervisor to execute solutions.
  • Update maintenance records and service history in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); affix service stickers with service dates and responsible personnel.
  • track equipment performance after repairs and organize warranty claims and outsourced repairs with suppliers.

Installation, Commissioning & Inventory

  • Receive, inspect, and verify new GFF/DAK equipment against Local Purchase Orders or delivery notes; produce installation inventories and reports and upload to the GFF database.
  • assist installation, commissioning, testing, calibration, and acceptance of new equipment alongside the GFF Biomedical Engineer (BME)/Supervisor, ensuring equipment is fully operational before handover.
  • keep an accurate inventory of all medical equipment; track movement, transfers, disposal, and replacement status, and recommend replacement of obsolete or non-repairable equipment.

Training & Capacity Building

  • Train clinicians and equipment users on proper use of biomedical equipment through demonstrations, videos, and quick-start user guides placed on equipment.
  • create and update equipment-specific SOPs and user guides; assist implementation of the Health Builders User Training Program (UTP) and recommend refresher training where needed.

Assessment, Reporting & Coordination

  • detect equipment and training gaps at supported facilities and recommend interventions; advise management on procurement priorities based on equipment condition and facility needs.
  • deliver monthly facility visit plans, spares budgets, and activity reports to the GFF BME/Supervisor; generate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual biomedical reports and donor updates as required.
  • Complete monthly BMET M&E tools (e.g., equipment utilization tracking) and report issues affecting equipment usage, such as lack of reagents, poor infrastructure, or budgeting constraints.
  • detect and forecast spare parts and consumables needs; keep spare parts inventory and recommend reliable, vetted suppliers.
  • Liaise with health facility staff, clinicians, manufacturers, distributors, and service providers; assist donor visits, supervision missions, and equipment audits.
  • assist development of biomedical engineering policies, SOPs, and maintenance guidelines, and promote sustainable equipment management systems at partner facilities.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities meet safety requirements and best practices; report safety incidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform other biomedical engineering duties assigned by Health Builders management, including assist for emergency response needs.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Competence in repair of mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic, and/or computerized medical technology to diagnose and repair a range of medical devices and systems.
  • Ability to utilize basic electrical and mechanical tools for testing and repair; willingness to learn to operate, test, and repair new types of equipment.
  • Proficient with computers for report documentation; familiarity with Computerized Maintenance and Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.elec
  • Ability to train and mentor healthcare workers in proper equipment utilization.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; flexible, adaptable, and committed to continuous learning.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma (A1) in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Medical Electronics, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional certification in biomedical equipment maintenance is an added advantage.
  • At least 1–2 years of experience maintaining key hospital equipment (e.g., patient monitors, oxygen concentrators, sterilizers/autoclaves, radiant warmers, incubators, height/weight scales); knowledge of electrical wiring and computer/TV repair is a plus.
  • Experience working in hospitals and health centers.
