FXB Rwanda is a registered Rwandan Local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) rooted in Rwanda since 1995, and a member of FXB Global, carrying the legacy of François-Xavier Bagnoud into its fourth decade — across all four provinces and the City of Kigali.

FXB Rwanda implements integrated development programs aimed at reducing poverty and vulnerability and promoting sustainable livelihoods, food and nutrition security, health, education, WASH, and economic empowerment.

FXB Rwanda is currently seeking to recruit a qualified, motivated, and experienced Agronomist to assist the implementation of the FXBVillage Project in Gisagara District.

Project Background

The FXBVillage program uses a holistic approach designed to addresses the multiple interconnected dimensions of poverty, including health, education, and income generation, to help the most vulnerable families become self-sufficient and graduate out of extreme poverty within a three-year period. From October 2026, FXB Rwanda will start the implementation of the FXBVillage project in Kansi and Kibirizi sectors of Gisagara District in the Southern Province of Rwanda.

Job Purpose

The Agronomist will deliver technical guidance and hands-on assist to FXBVillage participant households to enhance agricultural productivity, food and nutrition security, household income, and resilience to climate change.

The position will assist participants to adopt regenerative and climate-resilient agricultural practices, enhance soil health, increase crop productivity and quality, strengthen sustainable farming systems, and link farmers to appropriate markets.

Low-tech solutions and regenerative agriculture practices will be implemented through two complementary levels of Climate-Resilient and Regenerative Agriculture Hubs (CRRAHs). Community CRRAHs will serve as collective learningand demonstration spaces incorporating agroforestry, fruit trees, composting, organic fertilizers, local food preservation techniques, rainwater harvesting, as well as the promotion, propagation, and conservation of local seeds adapted to the agroecological realities of the project areas. 

The successful candidate will work closely with participant households, community structures, local authorities, and other agricultural stakeholders to make sure that project-supported agricultural interventions are effectively implemented and generate sustainable results.

A. Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Agricultural Technical assist and Extension

• deliver technical guidance and practical coaching to participant households on crop production and sustainable agricultural practices.
• Train farmers on appropriate crop selection, seasonal planning, land preparation, planting, crop management, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and storage.
• Promote the adoption of regenerative and climate-resilient agriculture practices, including soil fertility management, erosion control, water conservation, crop diversification, mulching, composting, agroecological practices, and other appropriate techniques.
• assist farmers to enhance soil health, productivity, and the sustainable use of available land and natural resources.
• perform regular field visits throughout the agricultural cycle, from land preparation and planting through harvesting, to deliver timely technical advice.
• detect agricultural challenges affecting participant households and deliver appropriate technical solutions.

2. Farmer Training and Demonstration

• Contribute to the design and adaptation of agriculture related training manuals.
• Design and facilitate practical agricultural training sessions for participant households .
• Establish and facilitate Climate-Resilient and Regenerative Agriculture Hubs (CRRAHs) and practical demonstration plots where appropriate.
• Facilitate farmer-led experimentation and learning to detect locally appropriate and effective agricultural practices.
• Promote peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing among participant farmers.
• assist farmers to apply improved technologies, including Water Harvesting techniques and farming practices demonstrated through the project.

3. Agricultural Productivity and Food Security

• assist participant households to increase crop productivity, enhance the quality of agricultural produce, and strengthen household food security.
• Promote diversified agricultural production to enhance household nutrition and resilience.
• Advise farmers on efficient and sustainable use of agricultural inputs and resources.
• assist participants to create practical agricultural production plans aligned with local seasons, market opportunities, and household priorities.

4. Market Linkages and Income Generation

• Facilitate linkages between farmers, cooperatives, buyers, local markets, and other relevant value-chain actors.
• deliver guidance on post-harvest handling, quality improvement, aggregation, and value addition.
• detect opportunities for participants to strengthen agriculture-based income-generating activities.

5. Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement

• Work closely with Sector and District agricultural officers and agronomists in the planning and implementation of project agricultural activities.
• keep effective collaboration with local authorities, farmer groups, cooperatives, extension workers, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Participate in relevant agricultural meetings, workshops, trainings, and coordination forums on behalf of FXB Rwanda, as assigned.
• Ensure effective coordination between agricultural interventions and other components of the FXBVillage Project.

6. Planning, Monitoring and Reporting

• Contribute to the development of agricultural activity plans, implementation schedules, and budgets.
• Participate in project planning and budgeting related to agricultural interventions.
• track the implementation and progress of agricultural activities against agreed targets and indicators.
• keep accurate records of agricultural activities, farmer participation, production results, challenges, and achievements.
• produce and submit periodic activity reports and technical updates to the Program Coordinator.
• Document lessons learned, good practices, innovations, and success stories emerging from agricultural interventions.
• Contribute to project assessments, evaluations, and other data collection exercises as required.

7. Community Engagement

• Build strong and constructive relationships with participant households and rural communities.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of the realities, constraints, and opportunities faced by smallholder farmers.
• Promote farmer participation, ownership, and accountability in the implementation of agricultural activities.
• make sure that agricultural interventions are inclusive, practical, locally appropriate, and responsive to the needs of vulnerable households.

8. Other Responsibilities

• Participate in project evaluate meetings, trainings, workshops, and other organizational activities as required.
• Perform any other duties and responsibilities relevant to the position as assigned by the supervisor.

B. Required Qualifications and Competencies

1. Education and Professional Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, Crop Production, Agricultural Sciences, or another closely related field.
• At least three (3) years of relevant professional experience in agronomy, agricultural extension, crop production. Working with smallholder farmers and rural communities will be an added advantage.
• Demonstrated practical experience in regenerative agriculture, climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable land management, or agroecological practices is highly desirable.
• Experience working with NGOs, community-based programs, or development projects will be an added advantage.
• Experience facilitating farmer training, demonstration plots, farmer learning groups, or similar community-based agricultural approaches is an advantage.

2. Technical and Personal Competencies

• Strong knowledge of regenerative and climate-resilient agriculture practices.
• Practical understanding of crop production and smallholder farming systems.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with rural communities and vulnerable households.
• Strong facilitation, coaching, and community mobilization skills.
• Good communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong organizational, planning, problem-solving, and reporting skills.
• Good analytical and field-level monitoring skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Fluency in Kinyarwanda is required; good working knowledge of English and/or French is an advantage.
• A valid Category A driving license (motorcycle) is required, as the position involves regular field travel to rural communities and participant households.
• Willingness and ability to work extensively in the field and travel within Gisagara District.
